  • Online Fundraising

Fundraising has a legacy that dates back many decades. As long as communities, schools, and churches have had non government-sponsored activities and extracurriculars, fundraising by private groups and individuals has been necessary. In years past, most fundraising efforts have been fairly conventional. One obvious example that springs to mind is a catalog fundraiser, frequently used by school fundraising efforts. Students are instructed to show catalogs full of products to relatives and neighbors, who in turn choose items and have them shipped. Unfortunately this is costly and time consuming due to bad shipping and a series of middlemen. The same story of inefficiency is paralleled by other fundraisers too, which is why many are now considering online fundraising.

Online fundraising is like offline fundraising in many ways. However, the amount of goods and services offered by what would be equivalent to a catalog fundraiser is unlimited. Additionally, tracking and goal achievements are extremely up to date, usually even up to the minute. The middle-men are largely gone, typically replaced by small, marginal fees. Social media is something that should be highly considered when it comes to online fundraising. Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, and other such services are pivotal in getting word out about your group's online fundraising efforts, and can sometimes help achieve goals within days or even hours if the online fundraising effort is well concerted.
